Synopsis

Masaki has just been booted unexpectedly from popular "NewTube" trio, the Harikiri Sisters, and tries to hold onto that popularity. She makes her own NewTube channel with results in her being canceled online (as if she wasn't already before).

After sulking and drinking all night, she happens upon a vampire and makes a deal with her. Together, they aim to reach 1 million subscribers on their new channel. Hilarity ensues.

First Impressions

I started watching this anime on a whim after pressing looking for random anime suggestions on MyAnimeList. At first it didn't really grab my attention. Masaki just got kicked from her NewTube channel? Eh, I kinda didn't care because I didn't know her character yet, but I wanted to give it a chance. (Especially since I thought she was cute :3)

By the end of the first episode, really it was around the middle, I started getting invested. Live's energetic personality and how she pairs with the other characters was really fun to see. Plus I'm a sucker for girls with full eyebrows (and vampires) so I was probably gonna like it anyway. I'm just glad it's not just focusing on the aftermath of Masaki's situation.

I'm excited to see what shenanigains they get into! ^w^

Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

Episode Tidbits

Episode 1:

I love how Masaki IMMEDIATELY went and made another youtube channel lol. The grind never stops I guess. Too bad it blew back up in her face.

Episode 3:

They just keep introducing characters I think are cute huh? This anime got me caught up man lol. I love tokage so much! ♡(。- ω -)
Also, the fact that vampires eating garlic results in them getting loopy was unexpected but very funny lmao.

Episode 4:

This was such a sweet episode! Although it was sort of bittersweet, I'm glad Fu got some closure and that Aya still felt so strongly in her friendship with Fu. Her singing really is beautiful ♡

Episode 7:

I'm glad Masaki starts to loosen up a bit in this episode. I think it's true that most people sub to Youtube channels to see the dynamic between the crew or the authenticity of said creator. Anybody can watch a gameplay comentary video made by like IGN or something, but you probably wouldn't come back to watch again.

Whereas if Markiplier did a video on said game, I would enjoy it a lot more or even rewatch it eventually lol.

The difference here is, I like Mark's personality. I think he's funny and his comentary brings a lot to the games that he's playing. I think it's a bit harder for your personality to really shine if you're doing something for work like the former.

Episode 8:

Aaaa this episode had my so NERVOUS. Fu blanking out on stage is so real too. I hate public speaking or anything related to being on stage ( ╥ω╥ )
Also, THEIR PERFORMANCE OUTFITS ARE SO CUTE!! o(>ω<)o

Episode 12:

I did not expect everything to be staged! The whole episode had me at the edge of my seat. I did kinda suspect something was up when Yuki escaped the casket but I didn't think about it too much.

Final Thoughts

Mayonaka Punch was a great watch overall! I loved all the characters, even Yuki who I didn't like that much at first. It had a satisfying end as well, leaving it open to continuation or it could be left off there.

Making Masaki a less than perfect person was kinda refreshing to see. She's not horrible but she can be impulsive and put herself first before others. These traits make things feel a little bit more real yknow? I also appreciate that she still had some growth without changing her core personality. She gained the courage to be true to herself and say that she likes being on camera for others!

It was so nice to see everybody helping in the final act too! Even Kikka and Otomi joined in! Although... I still don't know what their deal is. Idk if i missed it in the first episode or something but.. I don't remember why Masaki was booted from the Harikiri Sisters in the first place. I initally thought Kikka and Otomi were being horrible to Masaki or something but I'm not sure. Either way, I'm glad they made up after all this time.

I do wish Tokage's past was expanded on a bit more though o(TヘTo) I think she was the only one who didn't get a focus episode unless you count the first one she appeared in.

I have to give my kudos to the creator of this anime for a couple reasons:

  1. Mayonaka Punch isn't actually based off a manga or LN! I don't think I've seen too many anime's that were stand-alone with no previous material. I think they did an amazing job creating a funny, cute, and fun series!
  2. The character designs are really great! Everyone has their own individual style but they're all well thought-out
  3. I'm really glad they did the younger looking characters justice. Ichiko was turned into a vampire as a child but she is 100 years old because she's a vampire. But because she was turned as a child there's some things she never learned like reading kanji for example. Same with Fuu. I think they were written well and I'm happy there wasn't anything weird done with them.

I hope you'll give it a watch! My only gripe is I wish there was more T-T but you gotta leave things up to the imagination sometimes.

Farewell, MayoPan! ~ヾ(・ω・)
