Fellow period havers.. have yall ever felt HORRIBLE and look at the calendar like oh! My period starts next week, it's PMS, again. Mine just ended recently so I was wondering why I was feeling like crap AGAIN, seemingly for no reason. Turns out PMS not only stands for PreMenstrual Syndrome but also PostMenstrual Syndrome! So this means some people can experience PMS symptoms both before and after their period ends.
I am, unfortunatly, one of those people. (。T ω T。)
Legit, was sitting in bed like "everything is bad, why is everything bad rn. i was feeling fine yesterday what happened?" Hormones happened. Apparently, (don't quote me on this, I just did a lil google search) something about estrogen levels dropping after your period is over? And that can cause a shift in mood. How fun. Really hate how for me, a whole like 10 days I'm just in hormone hell.
Kinda disapointed how education about women's health is so... not talked about, in detail?? I recently learned about a part of my anatomy that I was COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF ALL MY LIFE. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?? Had to go find this info myself because nobody ever told me.
Also, didn't know until a handful of years ago that it's called the menstrual CYCLE for a reason. It's because there's different phases that happens throughout the cycle, it's not just menstruation. (WTF is a luteal phase and a follicular phase??) Hormones fluctuate and do all this crazy stuff throughout the whole month and then the cycle starts again.
I thought it was just "Yeah you get your period once a month. That's it." But no! There's so much stuff that goes on in the background like (again, don't quote me on this. do your own research if you're curious) an increase of progesterone and estrogen to thicken the uterine lining. All this to prepare for the possibility of an egg getting fertilized but if not! These hormones come into play again, thining the uterine lining and boom that's menstruation right there.
I'll have to do some more research on this tbh. I wonder how much more I don't know that I should. I recommend using Clue's website for more info on this. They have some great resources and a period tracker app! They have a detailed privacy policy on their website if you're worried about, ahem, the govnt that's trying to take away our bodily autonomy. I think your info is safe on the app honestly. It's based in Germany so privacy things fall under their jurisdiction (paraphrasing).
I'll end this off with saying, go and be curious! Learn about your anatomy and how your body works because nobody will teach you otherwise.
And break the taboo of talking about periods! I'm not out here in pain and suffering a 3rd of every month for someone to say it's "inappropriate" to discuss.
Love yourself, love your body, and get a heating pad for cramps,

(P.S. why do I always get progressively more pissed while I'm typing these LOL)
